The Quintessence of Tonkin – A desire to touch audiences’ hearts
As a cultural enthusiast, Mr Dao Hong Tuyen — the Chairman of Tuan Chau Group — has nurtured a special project that presents Vietnam’s people, culture, customs and thousand-year traditions to the world. This project came about because he felt that the traditional shows that are currently being performed are not enough to satisfy and touch the hearts of spectators in the way that he wanted.
After spending time learning from international experts, and in combination with research conducted by a dedicated team, the first performance of The Quintessence of Tonkin was held on the last day of October 2017.
The vision of those who made the show — including Mr Dao Hong Tuyen — is not just about the content, but also the creative expression that is unprecedented in Vietnam before now — and results in creating an unforgettable memory for spectators.
And in order to build one of the largest and most magnificent stages Vietnam has ever seen, we sent a production crew to study abroad. Construction of stage and surrounding works began in 2007, and was finished in 2017. The sound system and lighting are all state-of-the-art and latest technology. In the marketplace of today’s cultural products, The Quintessence of Tonkin is a new experience, with an outdoor stage set in a natural context. Even the Thay Mountain appears in a scene — an emotional and thrilling revelation for the audience.
Highlights of the show include the two hundred actors who participate in The Quintessence of Tonkin every night — most of them are farmers of Sai Son, Quoc Oai. They are part of the show because it is said that no one can truly express truly the vivid life, culture, spirit and beliefs of the northern region like the residents of that land. The rest of the performers are young and enthusiastic students from the Art College. The Quintessence of Tonkin is a project that brings development values to Sai Son commune, helping local farmers to earn additional income to improve their lives, and support their homeland.
In the form of contemporary demonstration, the spectacle shares historic knowledge while still having a high entertainment factor for both local and international audiences. And after more than 100 performances, we have garnered positive feedback both from local and foreign audiences.
Although there many things still to do to continuously improve, we expect to continue reinvesting in the Quintessence of Tonkin to maintain and renew the lifespan of this ambitious cultural show. In addition, part of the revenue from the spectacle will be dedicated to the Vietnam Cultural Conservation Fund, which was founded to encourage and develop the cultural projects of individuals with similar interests by showing and promoting the beauty of Vietnam.
