Green Organic Commitment to the USA

In 2013, Shandong Tranlin Paper Co., Ltd. announced its first overseas investment in Virginia, in the United States. The five-year, $2 billion development is the largest greenfield project undertaken in the United States by a Chinese firm. Jerry Zhiyuan Peng, chair and CEO of Tranlin, has roots in Virginia. He is a 2003 alumnus of the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and member of the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees.

Tranlin Paper expects to start building its US$2B agricultural waste-based pulp, paper and fertilizer facility in Virginia in late 2016, with production to start in 2017. The company will hire an estimated 2,000 workers by 2020.

With the mission of “Green, Ecological, Innovative, Beneficial”, the company will create Tranlin Eco-industrial Park where the environment is beautiful and production and nature coexist in harmony. Virgnia officials were impressed with the environmental standards of the company's mills in China.

Tranlin does not use trees to make its products. The company developed a straw cleansing pulping technology that can process straw for use in its paper products and even "upcycle" residuals from the straw pulping process into organic fertiliser. It makes environmentally friendly, unbleached paper products from corn stalks and wheat straw, creating new “cash crops” for Virginia farmers.

“Tranlin represents a tremendous opportunity for Virginia’s corn and small grain producers by creating a lucrative new market for agricultural residuals that are typically left in the field," Todd Haymore, secretary of agriculture and forestry, said in a statement.

For Tranlin, it’s all about breaking into the largest consumer market in the world, with products ranging from paper cups, napkins and plates to tissues and paper towels. The new factory will churn the region's straw and corn stalks into products all marked "Made in the USA."

Tranlin paper will likely cost more than regular paper products, and will be targeted at environmentally-conscious shoppers. Tranlin will convert the residuals from its manufacturing process, known as black liquor, into humus-based organic fertilizer that will be marketed to specialty and organic farmers throughout the U.S.

Shandong Tranlin Paper Co., Ltd. Is bringing green, organic and sustainable technology and products to the US Market and is well positioned for the future.
